Approximately 42% of Canadians state that they are unsure whether they would enter a social relationship with someone who has a mental illness and 27% say they would be fearful of being around someone who suffers from serious mental illness. This is a small example of the stigma that exists in the world today.
Since I turned 30 years old my life has not been the same. When I tell people this, they often respond as everyone does because we know that 30 is a milestone age! However, when I turned 30, my life changed for different reasons. My eyes were opened to the fact that I have experienced severe depression and anxiety for as long as I can remember. A lot of things began to make sense to me and since that day, I have begun my recovery. Part of my recovery involves helping others and speaking to people about mental illness to raise awareness and breakdown the stigma.
